Luxating patella surgery is a procedure used to correct a condition where a dog’s kneecap (patella) dislocates or slips out of its normal position. This condition is common in small breeds and can cause pain, limping, and arthritis if left untreated.
The surgery typically involves deepening the trochlear groove, where the patella normally sits, to prevent it from slipping out. In some cases, the Veterinarian may also realign the quadriceps muscle by repositioning the tibial tuberosity (a bone at the front of the tibia) or tightening the soft tissues around the knee to further stabilize the patella.
