Total hip replacement (THR) is a surgical procedure performed to treat severe hip dysplasia or
arthritis in dogs, where the hip joint is replaced with an artificial implant. This surgery is usually
considered when other treatments, like medication, supplements, or less invasive surgeries, have not provided sufficient relief.
The procedure involves removing the damaged femoral head (the ball of the hip joint) and the
acetabulum (the hip socket). These are replaced with a metal ball and stem that fit into the
femur and a corresponding socket component that is anchored into the pelvis. These implants
restore normal joint function, providing pain relief and improved mobility.
